The respiratory disease known as bronchitis results in inflammation of the bronchioles, the lungs’ tiny airways. It primarily affects infants and young children and is most frequently brought on by a viral infection, such as respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, and breathing difficulties—which can be quite severe in certain situations—can be brought on by inflammation of the bronchioles. A physical examination and the patient’s symptoms can be used to diagnose bronchiolitis, which can then be verified by a chest X-ray or other tests. Supportive care, including fluids, humidified air, and symptom-relieving medications, is usually used to treat bronchiolitis. Hospitalization may be required in certain situations, particularly for young children and infants who are more likely to experience complications.
