There are 23 pairs of chromosomes in every man’s body. Two sex chromosomes make up one of these pairs. We refer to these as the X and Y chromosomes. The mother inherits one of these, while the father inherits the other. Males have one X and one Y chromosome, whereas females have two X chromosomes. In females, a recessive mutation can be overridden by a normal, unaltered, or healthy gene, suppressing the disorder. Only in females with two copies of the recessive mutation—one on each X chromosome—disorders linked to X-linked recessive mutations typically occur. In this instance, it cannot be overridden by a dominant “healthy” gene. However, males only have one X chromosome, and they will have the disorder if it has a recessive mutation.
