“Sarco-” literally translates to “muscle.” When discussing normal cell biology, this prefix is used to show that the term has something to do with muscles. However, the suffix ‘-lemma’ denotes a “confining membrane”; for instance, the membrane of a muscle cell is called sarcolemma, whereas the membrane of a normal cell is simply called the plasma membrane. For this reason, we reject option B. Since the term “sarcoplasm” refers to the cytoplasm of a striated muscle cell, we also reject option C. Sarcomeres, a muscle’s functional units, make up myofibrils. The myofibril’s job is to use the sliding filament model to contract muscles.
