The process by which diploid spermatogonia inside the male testes develop into haploid spermatozoa (sperm) is known as spermatogenesis. The undifferentiated primordial germ cells undergo multiple mitotic divisions at sexual maturity, yielding a large number of spermatogonia, or sperm mother cells. By receiving nutrition from the nursing cells, each spermatogonium actively develops into a larger primary spermatocyte. Spermatocytogenesis is the process by which spermatogonia develop into primary spermatocytes. Maturation divisions are the two consecutive divisions that each primary spermatocyte goes through. Meiosis or reductional division is the initial maturation division. As a result, two haploid daughter cells known as secondary spermatocytes are produced when the primary spermatocyte divides. Each primary spermatocyte now divides into two secondary spermatocytes through a second maturation division, a normal mitotic division that creates four haploid spermatids.
