The lack of a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles in the cells are characteristics of prokaryotic life. Prokaryotic cells have a single circular chromosome that is not surrounded by a nuclear membrane, and they are usually smaller and simpler in structure than eukaryotic cells. Other membrane-bound organelles including the Golgi apparatus, endoplasmic reticulum, and mitochondria are similarly absent from prokaryotic cells. Rather, they have a cytoplasm that houses ribosomes, which are in charge of protein synthesis, a cell wall, and a plasma membrane. The two primary categories of prokaryotic cells are bacteria and archaea. Numerous ecosystems, including as soil, water, air, and the bodies of plants and animals, are home to them.
